In reply to Paud's tale of Bill Healy's funeral, if I remember rightly, the Toyota crown estate had to be push started from the church where upon it struggled to make the burial site. We then repaired to the rugby club and played matches in a school of 24. It took a long time to find the winner and at the end of it, I'm not sure any one knew who the winner was. Good to hear you're still alive Paud. John Whitty.

I was reading the recent messages and read one submitted by a son of Snowy Gascoyne..... I had one encounter with Snowy and a memorable one it was... Bill Healy died in Muf in the late 70's. He was from Kilenaule Co Tipperary and was injured in the smelter explosion in the 60's. It was rumoured that he had money so on his death a debate ensued with family in london, Kilenaule and salisbury as to his funeral. The body was stored in the freezer in the Malcolm Watson. After a few weeks his ex-wife came from Salisbury and the decision was reached to bury him in Kitwe and have a Mass in the Catholic Church and a party afterwards in the rugby Club. The mine was payinfg for the funeral, so Eugene Mara, Brian McCoy and I went to Ndola to buy a coffin from Snowy and to hire a hearse. We spent the evening with him and had more than a few beers..we viewed the hearse and the coffin , we returned to Muf and booked the church for the following saturday. Snowy was persiasive in telling all to wait at the church and not attend the removal at the hospital. As we waited, the time grew near the appointed time....every Irishman within 200 miles was there and their lady friends of many racial hues as is the irishman's wont. lo and behold Snowy arrived ,,not with a hearse but in a Toyota Crown Estate with a plain wooden box sticking out through the back window...a row ensued in the carpark of the church. It transpired that the hearse had broken down five years previously ..some of our money was refunded after the intervention of Fr Guy.... not wishing to divide the money it was given to Don Gibson, he distributed beer to the value of it. my last memory of that day was a group of Irishmen more drunk than sober being persuaded that it was 8 a,m, and it was time to go home when Emil Wassamer came through the door for his first beer of the day.. From Derek Moon Hi to Sharon Gilroy and Claire Turner ( Jones ) Its good to know that some of the old crowd are still alive and kicking . Still remember times at Cricket, Rugby, Squash and Pool Clubs and being barred from Mufilira Boating Club (we were all young once). For those of you who remember him Neil Blair has a contact list of some of the old Mufilira crew and is always happy to hear from any of the old lost souls. Do any of the following names ring bells: Mark Dudley, Vaughn and Melanie White and the younger brother who's name escapes me, the 3 Stratfords Mark, Andrew and John, Gail and Jan McKeown, Ricky and Jackie Fertic (think that's how you spell it), you should all know Mark Wallace who is now apparently living back in Zambia. The list is endless the 2 Lawrence boys, the Allens 2 brothers and a sister also the Newbalds, the 2 Taylor girls got an email of one of them a while ago from New Zealand, the Chilcotts, some of the old Zambian crew Franco and Mario and Paolo Mangerotti. I am married for my sins with a 13 year old son who is football mad which is a shame because I am still rugby orientated, presently work for an American Company in the UK. If you want to drop me a line you can email me on johnmoon8@aol.com, you could also send some photos if you dare. I have some of the old crew so if you drop me a line I can always forward them to you and also let you know Neil Blairs email address if you still want to advertise the fact you are still alive. Ps has anybody heard from Mr Finnegan. Claire how's Nicola and have you ever heard from Paul McDonald. Also a note for your folks the Fitzgeralds and the Nels are still alive and living in the UK. Sharon how's your sister (sorry can't recall her name) Hope to hear from you soon if not have a cold beer for me.

Hi Fay, yes that was me talking about my mum's knee replacement, she is well on the mend thank you. She had one done about eight years ago, and suffered badly, but this one is much more advanced and she is progessing much quicker. She also hates water, and getting her face wet, and at the age of 77 she says her swimming days are over! She walks quite a bit though so thats something. What a great way to learn to "swim" though, I also am not a good swimmer but my children are great. Neither swam in Muf unfortunately, but really took it up once we got back to the UK. Stuart even swam for England in the under 15's and did very well. Lot of hard work though training at 5.00 a.m every morning and again every night. Still I would love to have those days back again, I really miss having my children at home, although its been a long time, Stuart is now 33 and Samantha is 35, its the six grandchildren that keep me going now! (I cant believe I am this old!!) Have a great Christmas Fay, and a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year, and that goes for all ex-Mufulirians. Best wishes - Jan

Hi Jan (I presume),Oooh Knee replacement is a painfull business, hope your mum has a quick recovery. The best exercises for that is in the swimming pool. I know Our neighbour, in Muf, Mrs. Alice Barnard had it (got knocked over by one of my 11 Ridgeback pups they got from me,who grew up to be boisterous). She would get into the pool every afternoon and do these exercises. As a matter of fact that's how I learnt to swim! Like a good neighbour I would get into the pool with her to keep her company and (I was a bit of a keep fit fanatic too, still am)do exercises with her.God only knows what would have happened if I got into trouble...I could'nt swim a stroke!Anyway one fine day I decided to stop being a ninny and put my face under water.and do some 'object pick up' from the bottom of the pool, like my kids did at the swimming club (both were good swimmers).Having done that I decided to test my bouyancy tanks and lifted my legs off the floor and hey presto!I was floating!!All this while Alice was yelling and cheering! Suffice it to say I could float well but really nothing to talk about where actual strokes are concerned.Still cant swim but have actually floated to my hearts content in the Carribean Ocean, despite my family's worry's and warnings!Yep, learnt to "swim" at the ripe old age of 38. Cheers Fay

Your wonderful story of your "van" had me laughing. I was travelling once with my friend Janet Haig into Kitwe and we were pulled up by the "chips" type bikers to be asked if I could put my indicators on, which I did, yes they said, they worked fine, then my handbrake, yes that worked fine, and then my wind screen wipers (which unfortunately did not work!). Janet in a moment of genious and as quick as you like said "Oh you cant kid us officer, we know as well as you do, that these wind screen wipers will only work when its raining!" Oh yes he said, I was just checking!!. Brilliant.

Hi Jan, how funny....the hump back bridge one also stuck in my mind and as to being curtious to others... you could'nt go very wrong, travelling at the high speed of 35km per hour could you?!I remember whenever the traffic cops had money for gas they would get on their brand new motor bikes and dress up like'Chips'and chase innocent motorists. Many a time I was pulled up to the side, only to be asked if I had my Triangles! Many times I would be driving a contraption which my husband built out of different motor parts (he put a London Taxi diesel engine into a toyota van) which looked like the local chicken farmers delivery van!! I used to drive this van periodically just to keep it in running condition and to take my three Rhodesian Ridgebacks for a ride. Invariably when I drove this van I would get the cops chasing me and they would be my 'wave on the street'friend cops. As soon as they recognised me they would give me a very confused sheepish grin and ask what was wrong with the vehicle as it made quite a racket.I had to explain my husbands genius, and they would nod, still confused but forgotten to ask me for the MOT!! Such were the trials and tribulations of life in Muf.Nothing to do except run into town a half a dozen times a day because 'butter' had just come into ZCBC. Or there was Cooking oil at Mc'Raes, or bread at 'Dirty Sammy's'(Rio Stores)! Still the best years of my life! Fay.

Hi again Fay I also havent laughed so much for ages, as I was writing it I was thinking how ludicrous the whole thing was! Glad I wasnt the only one who failed again and again like your friend! I was trying to recall some of the ten golden rules of the road, and one was "dont overtake on hump back of bridge!" and another was "always be curtious to other road users" - that might not be so bad today in this country eh? But who would want to take their driving test in any other country when you can take a test like that - you couldnt make it up could you?! Take care - Jan

Hi Jan,I know!....was'nt the driving licence a farce?! I remember everyone I knew had to go at least a half a dozen times! I was fortunate as the third time coincided with the Zambian Independence day being the following day and everyone at the police station were busy with God knows what and I said it would be a nice independence gift for me to pass the driving test? So they looked at me coyly and flirted a bit and gave me the licence!!! Ha,Ha!! I could'nt believe it....just goes to show if you don't ask you don't get! I even made a couple of 'wave on the street' police men friends. It was my first licence ever. The first time I went for the test, my foot trembled so much I could'nt even drive let alone go through the drums. I hit them the following time. But my Parallel Parking was flawless as I had a Mini and just zipped in and out! I remember one of my friends had to go 14 times and one of the times she braked so hard at the stop sign that the police guy's hat fell on her lap and she knew definitly she was going to be failed!Thank you for sharing your memories....I haven't had such agood laugh for a while.Fay

Hi Fay, How fantastic to have played at the Shinde stadium, and what memories! No I dont remember Angela Roberts, but I was in The Pyjama Game, Black Comedy, Rape of the Belt, Alice in Wonderland and produced/directed some one act plays and wrote a production called "a little bit of everything" which was exactly as it says a sort of variety show. I also used to do a bit at the Folk Club with Richard Arbenson who was a fantistic guitarist and harmonica player. We had great fun all round. I also remember coming to Muf without a driving licence and taking eleven attempts to get my licence in Muf! First you had to remember the "ten golden rules of the road" and answer a few questions, if you got through that you then had to reverse your car between a row of oil drums, this is where the problem for me occurred - they were set down a rickety track half an inch away, either side of your car, so of course as you reversed in, you would hit a slight bump or camber and hey presto you had hit the ruddy oil drum! An exited officer would then throw up his hands and exlaim excitedly " you have failed AGAIN Mrs Richards!!" Only after several attempts to get through the barrels still with no luck, I took John Costopoulos with me as my qualified driver, he knew some of the officers there and managed to get them to give me some leaway through the blasted things! I did eventually pass, but lots of wonderful memories. Thanks Fay.

Hey Jan, do you remember Angela Roberts....they arrived the same time we did and she was one of those people who participated in everything. I remember she and her two kids and perhaps her husband Graham too, were in a play called 'Toad of Toad Hall', which we went to see at the little theatre. she was also a member of our short lived netball team. We called ourselves 'The Blue Birds'.I can remeber some of the girls who played in the team. Brenda Osbourn, Brenda Easby, Donna Deuchar,Angela Roberts and Judy Huxley and a few others whose names escape me. This was 1976 - 1977/78 period. I know the Roberts only did one two year contract.I remember playing at Shinde stadium against the Zambian girls and getting littterally run over by them!! Those were the days. cheers.. Fay

Hi Fay Yes I am a member of the GNR and did find John, but so far he has been the only one. I check a couple of times a week in case someone has any news of the people I am looking for, but just may take a bit of time. I am more than willing to wait though as some of our times and memories were so wonderful it would take us months to reminisce(sp?!). Keep well. Jan

so pleased to have found this web site. I am Jane Burger, was Jane Garside and grew up in Muf. Was a ballet dancer at the big ballet school and did many, many pantos, ballet shows at the mine little theater. Left for boarding school in Bulawayo, St. Peters in 1961. I had the best childhood ever growing up in Muf. We lived at no. 57 Ndola Rd. Would love to hear from anyone who might have known me then. Would love to know what happened to Micheal Wright, my very first boyfriend! Lost touch in 1966?

Hi Fay, What wonderful memories, and its great to know that there are people out there who feel the same as me about Muf. I didnt have too much to do with the boating club, but went there a couple of times when my parents visited. Most of my time was spent either at the Little Theatre or the Folk Club, I also went to Karate every evening (trying to keep fit!) The wonderful friends made, the Braai's, the fun and laughter, yes Fay they were without a doubt the best days of my life. Unfortunately, not been able to trace any of my friends from those times, but hope to make new ones, and have my heart set on taking my new husband to see the place that has such a special place in my heart. Maybe one day........ Nice talking to you Fay. Best wishes - Jan

Hi Jan, No I don't remember The Orange Disco either. All I remember is the Mark 2 and the Road Runner Disco which was run by Ted Elliot and his sons.I remember dancing the nights away at the boating club and the rugby club. We were at the boating club every weekend!! Husband fishing and the kids swimming and mucking around with the bar Piano. Then the Braai's were lit and we did our supper before putting the kids to sleep in the back of the station wagon! We continued to discuss the days catch and some tall stories of the one that got away from the fishermen, at the bar. Benson the barman was always there.. and all our regular boating club crowd. Altho' I did not drink I was just happy to sit and listen to all the stories with a glass of cocacola! Those sure were the best days of my life and I cherish them! Fay

Hi, I do not remember the 'Orange Disco' but Ken Simmons lived next door to us on Kombe Avenue and owned Doberman Pichers that would come through the fence and fight with our dogs! We were also there when Ken had Hot oil poured on him by a lady friend and was in Intensive care for a long time.I will never forget that day!!! Fay Bradbury

Buying our Mini Cooper Hi, t I had to share the memory...it might be slightly different to you, Noel, as the Cooper became your 21st birthday present...but the buying of the Cooper was something very special, apart from it being the first Cooper in Northern Rhodesia. After Pam's wedding, as you might well remember, we traded the 1960 Ford Fairlane (EA 774) in to Ross Goldring Motors, for Mom's red Austin Mini 850, (NM 6669)...the deal was discussed at the wedding, when Ross Goldring approached dad, and asked him how he was going to pay for Pam's wedding...the largest in town, known to history..........Dad, obviously had enough time to ponder over the discussion, and it had obviously been in the back of his mind, as we had been road testing the very first Mini in Northern Rhodesia, the week before....Monday came, and before you could say Morris Minor, we had the first Mini 850 not sold to a garage in Northern Rhodesia, on 5 June 1961! NM 6669 was a bit of an icon, but knowing Dad's penchant for not keeping cars too long, six months passed all too soon and dad, with a bit of nudging from me, was now looking at the prospect of getting the "NEW" Mini Cooper...the first one in NR being Avocado Green and white. The deal between Ross Goldring and dad was soon struck, and without losing more than a pound or two, the red Mini, was quickly sold to the Padre at St Mary's, and we took delivery of the first Cooper in the country! Mom was not allowed to come to the "trade in" ceremony, but I do remember the chief mechanic at Goldring Motors showing me that one had to "drop" the bonnet, to avoid dents, and off we drove to present Mom with her new "present". (NM 7340) Shock and horror when Mom decided at 5:30 in the afternoon, that she wanted to drive her new car....after all, the only people who could run her in were dad, you or me! Obviously quite a bit of negotiation took place, because all I can remember is the two of us very nervously climbing into the back seat, as Dad took up his position to the left of Mom........ Who needed a Rev Counter as mom dropped the clutch at 5500 and wheel spun out of the driveway down F Avenue, not slowing down until the stop street at 7th Street, about a mile down the road. quick stop at 7th, and a quick left into the street, and Mom was again reaching peak revs in heaven alone knows what gear when dad, nervously called a sharp left into K Avenue...forgetting that they were digging a new drain under the road, and 90% of the corner was cut off with 45 gallon drums! I now know where we get our racing blood from, as mom chucked the Cooper left, missed the drums, and wound the Cooper up the road for the next mile or so where we did a 90 degree left into the extension of F avenue, and finally home, where we all fell out of the car in an extreme state of weakness, with the exception of mom, who thought that her new Cooper was bloody marvelous! Luckily we were able to get the keys the following Saturday and sort of run the car in on a trip around the Copperbelt, before letting Mom loose again after the first service. Her stories of scaring the living daylights out of Elaine Wright and Yvonne Heatley, after having an argument with them after a golf match in one of the other Copperbelt towns, as well as getting Elaine smoking in terror take up another chapter!!

Although I do remember you, It was you sister Gill that I had more contact with and sadly lost touch with her many years ago. She was married to my Step brother, Tony Evans. The last time I saw them was when I visited them while they were living in London. Probably around 1979. I have often thought of Gill and have wondered where she finally settled. The following message is posted on behalf of Baz Gascoyne. Please contact him directly as described below if you can help him. Thanks. Hello there. Is there anyone out there who remembers Joseph Gascoyne known to his friends as Snowy. He lived in Ndola, Zambia between 1964 - 1980 and lived on the Mufulira Road. He was the local Undertaker and Hangman. If you remember him and had dealings with him either good experiences or bad I would love to hear from you. When in Ndola just recently I did hear both which was of no surprise to me. He was first married to a lady called Yvonne who had a son called Philip. He then divorced and later remarried a lady called Christine who had two children called Sharon and Stephen. If you can give me any information I would really appreciate it as this would be helpful to get a better picture of who he was. The reason for asking is I am his son. Many thanks for taking the time read this. I look forward to hearing from you. If you can help Baz, please contact him directly at bgzambia@aol.com. Thanks very much.
